The city itself has one memorable very thing: the waterfront promenade

Halkidiki, on the other hand, is amazing. Amazing nature where you can still find it, amazingly crowded in the touristy parts, and amazingly shut off as you get close to the Athos monasteries (as a woman, of course).

Ant the sea... so blue and so inviting! And wonderful sand, and really really hot. Not the best idea to go there in august, we were chasing every bit of shadow we could, and there was not a lot...

You fly to Thessaloniki from pretty much anywhere and then rent a car. And then do your best to avoid the heavy traffic from the Halkidiki peninsula.

Also, if you're going to go into the wild with the car, make sure you purchase full insurance. We scratched the paint in some bushes, and we were happy to have the nice insurance to cover it.
